To this end, we publish video and text content on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as on this platform — and in Arabic, French and Spanish as well as English — reaching a combined audience of hundreds of millions.

AJ+, formally launched in 2014, is the trailblazing brainchild of the young-and-restless creative minds of Al Jazeera’s Incubation and Innovation Unit, who earlier than most saw the emerging opportunity to reach a millennial audience with a video news product delivered via social media platforms.

The new brand set the industry standard for short-form videos optimized for consumption on smart phones via social platforms, racking up more than 10 million Facebook subscribers in its first three years. That spirit of innovation and bold social-justice journalism brought millions more viewers on that channel, as well as YouTube, Instagram and Twitter as AJ+ launched new Arabic-, Spanish- and French-language operations in the years that followed.

AJ+ is part of the Al Jazeera Media Network, an editorially independent entity funded by the government of Qatar as an investment in promoting “the public good” — in the way that the British taxpayer funds the BBC.

Al Jazeera was launched in 1996, breaking new ground with its critical journalism as the first independent TV news outlet in the Arabic speaking world. It became a vital source of information and perspective during the US invasion of Iraq, and with the launch of Al Jazeera English in 2006, emerged as a major force in global news with courageous and prize-winning journalism that offered viewers a welcome alternative in a market long dominated by one or two brands based in Western capitals.
