POSITION  OVERVIEW

AJ+ is seeking a sharp, mission-aligned Copy Editor to ensure clarity, accuracy and editorial excellence across our digital content. Working remotely from Africa or South Asia, you will play a crucial role in preserving our unique AJ+ voice — anchored in the experiences and priorities of the Global South. Our ideal candidate brings not only superb copy-editing skills but also global awareness and understanding, along with a critical eye for structural injustice. You understand how language shapes power and public understanding. You are someone who can help reframe global stories toward the perspectives of those most affected.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Copyedit scripts, subtitles, videos and graphics for clarity, accuracy, spelling, grammar and style

Ensure factual accuracy through basic fact-checking and source verification

Apply house style consistently, and help maintain/uphold our internal style guide

Engage with producers across the newsroom to explain corrections and promote the highest standards in our work

Thrive in a fast-paced newsroom and balance competing priorities to help producers meet tight deadlines

Monitor social justice stories around the world and keep up with changing language

rEQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Strong news judgment

Collaborative spirit

Proficiency in copyediting and adherence to a consistent style; knowledge of AP Style

Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to simplify complex, global issues for an English-speaking global audience

Comfort with fact-checking and source verification; experience in these areas is a plus

Understanding of journalistic ethics and editorial responsibility, especially when covering conflict, inequality and power dynamics

Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

Effective time management in fast-paced, remote editorial environments

Fluent in English, with an expert command of grammar and punctuation

Familiarity with social media platforms and the distinct tone and voice of AJ+
